Summer BBQ

We all joined Sheila Nielsen at her acreage on the evening of a tornado warning . . . nonetheless . . it never happened but we had a great time of fellowship, friendship, food and beautiful surroundings.
29 people attended and we all grew from the opportunity to get to know one another better!

Many thanks to Tony Gize (the Chef), Glen Smaha (Davis Chev) for the grill and Sheila for the you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it setting. If you don't know what to do at a party, just invite Michelle!

Thanks to all who turned out (31 members and one guest). AWBA now has 68 members. EMPOWER!
Professional Development Day

May 23, 2015

EMPOWER!
Professional Development Day

EMPOWER!
Professional Development Day

EMPOWER!
Professional Development Day

What an awesome day! Idyllic setting at Apple Creek Golf Course celebrating our 5th anniversary as a non-profit in Alberta, and being Inspired, Enlightened and EMPOWERED!

Cindy Clark inspired us as she took us through her journey in the world of trucking and mechanics. She had to learn a lot, but that is what women do.

Ilona Makar and Debbie van Camp facilitated a networking session based on the principles of deep relationships and getting to know one another personally.

We were enlightened by Bertrand Bickersteth who revealed the invisible powers of diversity. Why is it we cannot understand someone with a strong accent but they can understand us? Everyone enjoys some privilege, but the world accommodates itself to privilege.

During our celebration luncheon, after being introduced by Mayor Brown, Leona Esau spoke about Airdrie and some amazing successful businesses that are run by women entrepreneurs with a great idea and lots of commitment.

Jo-Ann Pawliw enlightened us as she shared that our emotional response actually affects our heart rate and therefore our brain's ability to process information. The key to performing better is to manage our emotions.

Deanna Hunter empowered us with some basics about Linked-In - an essential for business owners. And Eileen Head helped us understand some different personality types and led us through an exercise that increase our self-awareness.

We all left feeling Inspired, Enlightened and Empowered! And we all made some new connections!

Our feature speaker was Caitlin Haacke. Caitlin Haacke is a student at George MacDougall High School and one of the Amazing Airdrie Young Woman of Promise nominees this year for starting the movement which has spread from her high school, to all of Airdrie and around the world. She's even been to Japan to talk about the movement!

City council declared Oct. 9 as Positive Post-it Day as a result of one person fight back bullying by being positive.

Caitlin shared that kindness can come from everywhere. She shared the story that encouraged her about a lady in New York being inspired by a post-it-note "Never lose hope". One note can make a difference! Caitlin started performing random acts of kindness at a young age and has been active in the community with the hope that one girl can make a change in a community.

The Member in the Spotlight was won by Linda Stacyszyn with Staples.

Monthly General Meeting

Our theme for the month of March was marketing and Sherry Shaw-Froggatt was our feature speaker. As owner of airdrielife magazine and the founder of the Creative Airdrie Society, her expertise and passion is about having an idea and getting creative to encourage people to get on board.

Highly successful, Sherry shared some tips and ideas about how to brand yourself and your business on a minimalist budget. Her message was "keep it clear and simple". Lots of humour and real-life examples allowed us to enjoy her talk thoroughly and learn a lot as well.

Another great meeting for AWBA with 32 attendees! We were pleased to welcome six members who joined in February. AWBA is sponsoring the Amazing Airdrie Women Award - Promise, given to a young women under the age of 21 who has demonstrated initiative and enthusiasm for a bright future. Supporting entrepreneurial women in all facets of their life is one of our main values and we are honoured to sponsor this award for a young women in Airdrie. The luncheon is May 1 and members are invited to attend and support Airdrie Entrepreneurs and AWBA.

Board Development Workshop

The current AWBA Board of Directors participated in Board Development Fundamentals workshop Friday evening, February 20, and all day Saturday, February 21, 2015.

This incredible workshop was facilitated by Cathy Miller and Deb Kocay, and was sponsored by Alberta Culture and Tourism.

It was well facilitated with lots of great information and tools provided on 6 modules - Ethical & Legal Responsibilities; Roles & Responsibilities of Board Members; Policy Development; Committees; Managing the Work; and Building a Better Board.

Our Board of Directors now have additional knowledge, skills, and tools in order to better serve our organization and members.

Even though the information was focused on our non-profit organization, these principles can be applied directly to any business as well.

It was an amazing weekend of great personal and professional development as well as team building for the AWBA Board of Directors!

4H Western Stars Public Speaking Competition

A couple of our members participated in the local 4H speaking competition in Didsbury, serving as judges for the teens who had one prepared speech and one impromptu.

Amazing youth performances - we learned a lot about both the subject matter of their speeches as well as public speaking.

Thank you for inviting us to give back to our community and grow ourselves at the same time.

We hope that more AWBA members will participate next year, as it was a lot of fun!

What an inspiration to hear from Jacqui Jepson, the winner of 2014 Winning Edge Award, Airdrie's Premiere business Award, as she talked about how she grew her business from an idea to over 30 employees in just six years.Thank you Jacqui for sharing some of your journey with us.

Special Meeting

January 6, 2015

A great AWBA Event!

We welcomed the New Year with a Special Meeting to build sustainability into our non-profit association. Extending the term of election for directors, and changing the membership year from calendar to 12 months will allow us to have continuity in our membership and our leadership. We also talked about AWBA strategic plan for 2015 and revealed what to look forward to. Through community awareness, community support, personal and professional development, and being involved in a variety of events and opportunities, we will grow, Airdrie will grow and our businesses will grow.

Our new meeting place is Nose Creek Valley Museum, as we have outgrown our former facility. We also embraced a new format with trade tables, speaking spots for our members and more networking time. We introduced an organisational structure to include committees to share the work load and provide opportunities for members the deepen relationship and learn new skills that will help in business.

Looking forward to an active and exciting 2015!

Arlene Dickinson Luncheon Presentation

Arlene Dickinson Luncheon Presentation

Arlene Dickinson Luncheon Presentation

We all know her as an indomitable force in Canadian business: best-selling author, award-winning entrepreneur, television personality [the lone female 'Dragon'], CEO and venture capitalist. But what many do not know is the background story of how this long-time Calgary resident turned a vision for entrepreneurial success into reality. Now a mother of four and grandmother of five, Arlene still manages to top every major power list running.

Sixteen of us (two tables of eight) joined together to attend this event at the Telus Convention Centre, and enjoyed a wonderful lunch and some relationship time as well as of course being inspired by Arlene.

When events that align with our mission and goals, such as this one, come along, AWBA purchases table seating, allowing our members to participate at a discount.

A great AWBA Event!

The theme of this meeting was developing an elevator pitch. A great elevator pitch will include a reference to who you are, what your business or project is, and how it will benefit your audience. Having a few minutes to practice, everyone stood up and gave their newly inspired pitch. Great fun and a great personal development moment for all!

This was our last meeting at Cam Clark Ford, as we have outgrown the space. With meeting attendance averaging 20 to 25 people, AWBA has decided to re-locate to Nose Creek Valley Museum in 2015. Thank you Cam Clark for your most generous hospitality over the years!

September Networking and "Kick Off To Fall" Party!

September Networking and "Kick Off To Fall" Party!

On September 9th, 2014, AWBA hosted our "Kick off to Fall" party at beautiful Apple Creek Golf Course.

The setting, out in the country just north of Airdrie, amidst an early September heavy snowfall was stunning, and the appies and lodge were exceptional!

Mayor Peter Brown welcomed AWBA into the business community in Airdrie and Michelle Carre gave us some great ideas as she talked about "How to Run a Business in Fabulous Heels". Her insights (and props) were "pointed" and "colourful"!

There was lots of humour, and lots to talk about when connecting with new people.

This was the first social event AWBA has hosted and the most frequent comment we received as feedback was "you should do it again, soon"! We are sure our organizing committee is up for the task!

AirdrieFEST

September 6, 2014

AirdrieFEST

AirdrieFEST

AWBA attended AirdrieFest, hosted by the City of Airdrie, on September 6th, 2014.

Our members connected with a variety of community organizations as well as businesses, and the public, at this well attended event.

It was a beautiful day in Airdrie, and the event enjoyed a record attendance.

At no charge to our members, this was one of the ways that AWBA provides opportunities to connect with our community on a variety of levels, both on behalf of AWBA and also in our own business. Not only did we invite people to come to some of our upcoming events, we also enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each other a bit better.

Getting out in the community and getting involved is one of the best ways to grow personally and professionally!

Monthly General Meeting

We were delighted to have Kim Chernuska from the Royal Bank inspire, delight, and challenge us with her thoughts about "Work-Life Balance Matters".

Understanding the many challenges we face, balancing the demands of all of our undertakings, is often difficult. Each of us experiences a unique approach to these demands, and Kim shared some of her thoughts and insight with our ladies.

After breaking into small groups to reflect on how men and women think differently about the challenges we face in life, the group had lots to go home and think about and enjoy remembering!

At our monthly meeting on May 6th, we had a notable Enneagram and Relationship Consultant from Calgary join us, and speak on "Your Personality: Your Business". Eileen Head mapped out the Enneagram model and enlightened us about the nine different personality types.

There was lots of practical application, and lots of lively discussion afterwards and we were all left with lots of food for thought.

"Being YOU and understanding you is the biggest gift you can give to the liberation of your life." Eileen

Jean Hudson, an internationally acclaimed speaker, trainer and coach, delighted us with her talk entitled "Master Your Thinking to Increase your Profits". It was refreshing, provocative, realistic and practical, and delivered with an innate sense of humour. In her wonderfully gentle way, Jean created a safe space for us to get real with each other: to speak and hear what is true. Everyone felt that they grew both personally and professionally from sharing some of her treasures.
